    The goal This course will expose students to the field of linguistics, to research methodology in linguistics, as well as the language system and its fundamental characteristics.
    The outcome Students have acquired knowledge about linguistics and its subfields, about research methods in linguistics; students have acquired the basic terms and concepts in linguistics and its subfields; they can think critically and understand recent deveopments in the field of linguistics.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures Language and linguistics. Linguistics and other sciences. Subfields of linguistics. Research methodologies in linguistics . Synchrony and diachrony. The relationship between universal and language- specific. Genealogical relationship between languages. Language typology. Language universals. Areal linguistics. Subsystems of language. Lexicon and grammar. Basic terms and concepts in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Dictionaries, grammars, journals and reference books used in the study of Hungarian.
