      The goal To give students an insight into the key points on the notion of semantics and theories, research, and findings of semantic research in the last decades of the 20th century; introducing students to the ways of defining meanings of words, and the issues of meanings of sentences.
      The outcome Students get acquainted with the methods and results of semantic research. They are able to observe the differences between the insights and methods of traditional grammar and contemporary theories of semantics. Students also gain the ability of critical thinking and following the novelties in semantics, as well as the ability of applying new theoretical knowledge.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures The subject matter and issues of semantics. The question of meaning in semiotics. Interpretation of meanings. Intension and extension. The notion and description of meaning in formal, structural and cognitive semantics. The meaning of lexemes and utterances. The distinction of semantics and pragmatics. Theories of word semantics. Semantic categories. Contemporary semantics on parts of speech: semantic issues on nouns, adjectives and verbs.
      Contents of exercises Collecting and using relevant literature, discussing referential literature. Using scientific sources. Theoretical framework of research. Defining the structure of the work.
