    The goal Giving students an overview of the historical, social and literary background of late 19th century Hungarian literature. Lead-in to the period linking systems. Understanding the correlations between European and Hungarian spiritual movements, directions in art and literature. Analysis and comprehension of late 19th century styles, directions, genres and oeuvres. Reading and comprehension of literary texts.
    The outcome Students will get acquainted with late 19th century Hungarian literature. They will be informed on literary relations, contexts and processes; observe and understand the historical background and genres. They will have knowledge on major literary heritage, processes, events and oeuvres, and gain knowledge and experience in research and analysis of concrete examples.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures The age of Hungarian Romanticism. Romanticism and Realism. Early Modernism in Hungarian literature. The “genius” of Hungarian Romanticism: Mihály Vörösmarty. Sándor Petőfi’s oeuvre. János Arany’s oeuvre. Imre Madách: The Tragedy of Man. Novels by Zsigmond Kemény, József Eötvös and Kálmán Mikszáth. Periodization of Mór Jókai’s novels. Rewriting 19th century Hungarian literature and its canonization.
    Contents of exercises Practice classes, Other forms of teaching, Research work: Reading and interpretation of literary texts in practice classes. Student works. Writing short essays and notes.
