The goal | The objective of the course is to acquaint students with: (1) the principles and methodology of historical morphology, (2) morphological changes in Serbian, and (3) outlines of the historical lexicology. | |||
The outcome | After the course the student is able to: (1) know what are the relevant research questions in historical morphology and historical lexicology, (2) recognise and interpret the external and internal motivation of morphological changes in Serbian, (3) explain the morphological phenomena in Old Serbian texts, (4) diachronically explain the modern Serbian morphological phenomena. | |||

Contents of lectures | 1. Key questions for historical morphology (The influence of sound change on morphological patterns; On the nature of analogical change); 2. The main changes in the nominal system from Late Proto-Slavic to Modern Serbian (The common initial South Slavic nominal system; The declension classes; Elimination of non productive noun declensions; Changes in the singular of the *o /jo-declension; Changes in the singular of the *a /ja-declension; Loss of the dual number and its consequences for the plural; Changes in the plural of the productive noun declensions; General remarks on the declensions of personal pronouns, pronominal adjectives, adjectives, and cardinal numbers); 3. The main changes in the verbal system from Late Proto Slavic to Modern Serbian (The common initial South Slavic verbal system; The conjugational classes; Changes in the grammatical tenses and moods: present tense, imperfect, aorists, perfect, pluperfect, imperative, and conditional; The grammaticalization of future tenses; Elimination of the present passive participle and the active participles; The development of gerunds); 4. Outlines of the historical lexicology (The structure of the Late Proto-Slavic lexicon; Foreign influences on the Old Serbian lexicon; Lexical typology and typological changes in the Serbian lexicon). | |||
