The goal | The main goal of this course is to acquaint the students with an overview of positions and contraversies in the field of philosophy of mind, one of the most important philosophical disciplines today. | |||
The outcome | The students are able to evaluate the quality of philosophers' argumentations taken from different points of view in contemporary discussions on the mind-body-relation. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The concept of philosophy of mind. The history of philosophy of mind. The history of neurophysiology. The mind-body-relation as a classic philosophical issue. The cartesian dualism as the source of modern contraversies. Psycho-physicalism, materialism, (epi)phaenomenalism, reductionism. Classic and new forms of monism. The problem of consciousness. Brain and consciousness (neurophilosophy). Critique of cognitivism. Thinking and language. Analytic philosophy of mind. Thought experiments in the philosophy of mind. The problem of intentionality of mind. Intention and action. The problem of free will and weekness of will. Determinism, indeterminism, compatibilism. Theory of emotions (analytic and neurophilosophical aspects). Problems of personal identity. Theories of memory. | |||
Contents of exercises | The students are interpreting main articles of modern philosophers of mind (Ryle, Davidson, Nagel, Putnam, Searle etc.). In order to come to a better understanding of the argumentative techniques in this field of philosophical research – especially those practiced by analytic philosophers – the students have to apply some of these methods by writing a seminary paper on a specific topic. | |||
