The goal | Familiarizing with forensic identification of the individual characteristics of the author of a written text and linguistic aspects of the criminal justice system. General objectives include exploring the role of a linguist in interacting with the legal and legislative system by examining the actual or potential impact of a linguist on criminal investigation and legal actions and procedures. | |||
The outcome | Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. apply the skills of descriptive analysis of data in a wide range of written contexts in legal proceedings, including police interviews, court judgments; 2. critically analyze controversial data in written contexts, including areas such as author identification, questioned authorship, and detection of plagiarism; 3. competently communicate with activists in legal systems and environments; 4. make conclusions and give expert opinion on the principles of forensic science, for the needs of procedural authorities and other entities who seek expertise. | |||

Contents of lectures | The concept and history of forensic linguistics. The concept of authorship and author identification. Text measurement. Forensic transcription. Language variations in authorship. The theory of markedness. Comparative and non-comparative techniques. Authorship style. Idiolect. Stylistic markers. Stylistics and stylometry. Applications of forensic linguistics (text substance, appeals, ransom demands, author profiling, suicide letters, plagiarism). Language norms. Research methods. Method of comparing authorship.
