The goal | To introduce students to the relationship between language and society; to give an overview of variation at all levels of language (Hungarian) and of how such variation constructs and is constructed by identity and culture. | |||
The outcome | : Students understand how communication works, they are aware of the necessity to accomodate language to communication situations; they understand how social phenomena influence language; they understand the advantage of using regional, spoken varieties of the language in the classroom, along with the standard. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The relationship between society and language. Social determinants of language use. Foundational issues in sociolinguistics: the boundaries of sociolinguistics, the object of its study and its relation with other fields. Macro- and microsociolinguistics. The stratification of contemporary Hungarian. Language socialization. Language and age. Language and gender. Attitudes towards one’s dialect and the standard variety. Linguistic inferiority. Bernstein’s hypothesis and its criticism. The consequences of linguistic inferiority. Language contacts and the issues of bilingualism and multilingualism. Political aspects of language. National and minority languages. The status and types of minority languages. Hungarian in the Carpathian basin and in diaspora. Language planning. Sociolinguistic theory and practice and their applications in teaching. | |||
Contents of exercises | Students’ presentations on a selected topic, based on their own research conducted with native speakers of Hungarian in Vojvodina. | |||
