The goal | Introduction to translation theories and their relevance in translation practice. | |||
The outcome | Upon course completion, students will be able to 1. recognize and describe methods, paradigms and turns in translation studies 2. critically appraise the basic principles in various translation theories 3. understand how translation studies developed, identify the main problems and methodologies as well as turns in contemporary translation theories 4. analyse practical and theoretical translation problems taking into account relations between social, cultural and cognitive factors, complexity of the translation process and cultural and ethical function of a translation. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Translation studies as a research discipline (Holmes’ map). Definitions of translation (product and process). Types of translation. Unit of translation. Translation problem. Quality parameters in translation. General understanding of basic translation concepts in the following approaches to translation 1. linguistic approach (the concept and types of equivalence, translation procedures and strategies) 2. descriptivtivist approach (the concept of norm, target culture orientation, translation universals) 3. functionalist approach (skopos, extratextual and intratextual factors, brief, adequacy) 4. cultural approach (post-colonial theory, gender studies) 5. activist approach (narrative theory, action theory) | |||
